Sri Lanka simplifies access by abolishing visas for 38 nationalities

Le Sri Lanka recently decided to simplify access to its territory by implementing a policy ofvisa exemption for the citizens of 38 countries. This initiative, which came into effect on 2 September 2024, is designed to resolve the problems encountered by travellers as a result of the suspension of the electronic visa systemwhich led to long queues and delays at the airport. By proposing a new entry processthe government wants to boost its sector tourist and offer visitors a smoother experience.

The Sri Lankan government recently announced a new measure to make it easier for citizens of 38 countries to enter the country. With effect from 2 September 2024, this initiative is designed to address the inconvenience caused by the suspension of the e-visa system, by replacing this procedure with a "no visa" policy.visa exemption for stays of up to 30 days. The main objective is to stimulate the touristwhich has been hit hard recently.

A hasty initiative in the face of existing challenges

The introduction of this exemption policy was precipitated by the inefficiency of the e-Visa system previously in place. The foreign service provider responsible for managing the e-Visa was unable to provide a satisfactory service, leading to long queues and delays at airports for tourists. In this respect, the government's decision to alleviate these constraints was crucial to restoring visitor confidence, especially with the peak tourist season approaching.

A simplified model inspired by Singapore

To facilitate this exemption, Sri Lanka has opted for a system of stamp in passportbased on the model used in Singapore. This method aims to reduce the complex influx at visa counters, optimising the experience of travellers as soon as they arrive. The government has not only implemented this reform, but has also given delegated powers to the President to execute this operation quickly.

Countries covered by the visa waiver

The new visa waiver policy covers a total of 38 nationalitiesincluding countries such as Germany, Australia, the United States and France. In addition to these countries, three other nations have also been added to the list, although their names have not yet been revealed. Citizens of eligible countries will now be able to stay in Sri Lanka for up to 30 days without requiring a visa.

Restrictions and exclusions

It is essential to note that certain countries will not benefit from this exemption. Citizens from Afghanistan, Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, North Korea, Ghana, Myanmar, Nigeria, Pakistan and Syria will still have to follow the standard visa application procedures. They will have to go directly to the Immigration Department Sri Lanka to apply.

Consequences for the electronic visa system

The discontinuation of the e-Visa system was a major motivation for the new law. Although the current measure is seen as a temporary solution, there is still a pressing need to improve the ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation). Discussions around the return of an efficient electronic visa system or better management of the travel authorisation are ongoing, with decisions still to come. The aim is to ensure easier access for all international visitors, and optimised management of tourist flows.

A temporary test for the government

This simplification is currently being implemented as a test that should theoretically last six months. Visitors must enter the country before the expiry date of this measure. Although the government has recognised the need for such an intervention, it will be crucial to evaluate the results and adjust the system accordingly to maximise the flow of tourists without compromising security.

Expected benefits for the tourism sector

With the implementation of this new policy, Sri Lanka hopes not only to attract more tourists but also to reinvigorate a sector that suffered during the periods of restrictions due to the pandemic. The simplification of entry procedures could potentially increase visitor numbers, bringing a breath of fresh air to the local economy. It could also enhance the country's reputation as an accessible and welcoming destination.
