If you're planning a trip to Sri Lanka, whether you're attracted by the country's golden sandy beaches, rich archaeological sites or cultural diversity, it's essential to prepare your trip well. One of the key steps in this preparation is to obtain a Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA). Here's a step-by-step guide to submitting an eTA application for Sri Lanka, using official channels and avoiding potential pitfalls.
What is an eTA?
The eTA is a compulsory electronic travel document for all travellers to Sri Lanka for a period of 30 days or less. It is a quick and easy online procedure that can be completed from the comfort of your home.
How do I submit an eTA request?
1. Go to the Official Site
Applications for an eTA must be made via the Sri Lankan government's official website, which can be accessed at the following address https://eta.gov.lk/slvisa/. This site is the official channel for obtaining your eTA.
2. Fill in the Required Information
On the website, you will be asked to complete an online questionnaire which includes the following information:
- Details of your passport (number, expiry date, etc.)
- Travel itinerary (arrival and departure dates, address in Sri Lanka)
- Personal information (surname, first name, date of birth, etc.)
- Detailed address in Sri Lanka where you will be staying.
3. Download the necessary documents
You will need to download or fill in the information on the following documents:
- A copy of your passport
- A passport photo
- A copy of your plane ticket or reservation (if applicable).
4. Make your payment
The cost of a tourist eTA is USD 50 (excluding bank charges), and for a business eTA it is USD 55 (excluding bank charges). Payment must be made online using a bank card on a secure site.
Treatment Period and Validity
Duration of Treatment
The eTA application process is generally quick. However, it is advisable to submit your application at least a few days before your trip to avoid any unforeseen delays.
Validity of the eTA
The eTA is valid for 6 months from the date of approval. The maximum stay is 30 days for each visit, and the eTA allows multiple entries into the country.
Extension of the eTA
It is possible to extend your eTA if necessary. Details of the extension can be obtained via the official website or by contacting Immigration and Emigration Department Sri Lanka.
Reactivating the eTA Portal After a period of suspension due to controversy surrounding a new electronic visa system, the eTA portal has been reactivated. Travellers can once again obtain their eTA online, avoiding long waits on arrival in Sri Lanka. |
It is advisable to have a medical and repatriation insurance well established in Sri Lanka to cover any medical or other risks during your stay.
